| Scalloping
Looking for a fun and unique experience while you enjoy your stay in Florida? Try scalloping – a way for you to get in and enjoy the beautiful waters of the Steinhatchee River and catch your own scallops!
Scallop season begins early this year Friday June 19 to September 10, 2010. The Gulfstream Motel & Marina staff can help you get outfitted for this easy, fun activity for all ages.
Simply purchase a recreational saltwater fishing license and bring a snorkel/mask, fins and a mesh bag for your catch (this equipment is available in our Ship's Store). We recommend renting a boat (rentals are available at Gulfstream Motel & Marina) so you can easily get to the scallops favorite hiding spots. We can also help you identify the best locations so your excursion is successful.
Tips for Scallopers
- Scallopers need saltwater fishing licenses unless they go with a guide. An annual license for Floridians is about $17.50; a three-day license for visitors is about $17.50.
- You don't need a boat for great scalloping. At Hagan's Cove you can wade right into the marsh. Hagan's Cove is 14 miles north of Steinhatchee and five miles south of Keaton Beach, another popular scalloping spot.
- Charters and hotel rooms are scarce the first and last weekends of season.
- Steinhatchee is the richest scalloping ground in recent years.
